Tourism is vital for the socio-economic growth of regions, especially in developing nations like Eastern Africa. Despite its regional tourism growth, the sector faces challenges, notably a focus on wildlife-based tourism, neglecting urban tourism. To address this, this study was conducted to guide Eastern Africa in tapping into urban tourism. The study explores global trends, assesses Eastern Africa’s urban tourism development, identifies reasons for under-visitation, and proposes strategies to implement. The report also covers urban tourism potential to diversify economic activities and improve living standards, citing example cities like Paris and Dubai. It proposes comprehensive planning, policy integration, infrastructure development, unique branding, and partnerships as key features to unlocking Eastern Africa’s urban tourism potential and sustainable development.
