Summary

This report focuses on the period of economic recovery from the global pandemic. This recovery started in 2021 but failed to gain pace in 2022 due to various factors such as the severe drought in the Horn of Africa, and the breaking out of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022.

The report further explains how serious climatic events became the norm for the region, with Madagascar badly affected by a prolonged drought in the south of the island while South Sudan suffered significant flooding in early 2022. In addition, food production systems in the region suffered from multiple challenges, inflation being a severe problem for some countries.

Globally, inflationary pressures were already mounting in the second half of 2021, partly due to the disruption to global supply chains caused by the lockdown measures implemented to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. It is against this backdrop that this report is written, providing an overview of the macroeconomic and social status of Eastern Africa.
