Summary
This report delves into Burundi’s accession to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which aligns with the country’s strategic policy documents, including the National Development Plan (2018-2027), Burundi Vision 2025, and the National Trade Policy Strategy, among others. The AfCFTA agreement complements these policy and strategy documents in areas such as legal and institutional frameworks, trade facilitation instruments, and cross-border controls. The strategy development process involved broad national consultations, ensuring the involvement of public, private, and association sectors in promoting and developing commercial activities. While recent socio-economic policy reforms have positively impacted Burundi’s economy, the country still faces challenges like negative growth rates and a high poverty rate. Despite these challenges, the report highlights the potential for the country to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), given its tourism potential and preferential market access. Overall, the report provides a detailed analysis of Burundi’s potential for economic growth through its accession to the AfCFTA.
