Summary

This report highlights the importance of East African countries designing policies to attract Islamic financial institutions and investments. To achieve this, the study recommends that the region must understand Islamic finance principles, rules, and investment criteria to create a suitable legal and regulatory framework. Commissioned by ECA/SRO-EA, the study presents key findings and recommendations, providing an overview of global Islamic finance trends and an analysis of the current state of Islamic finance in Eastern Africa. It also examines the sector’s regulatory requirements, skills gaps, and constraints before concluding with policy recommendations for the region’s economic development.
