Zanzibar Tourism Satellite Account

Estimating The Contribution of Tourism to the Economy of Zanzibar

Select pages from this publication

Summary

The Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSAs) provide an internationally recognised and standardised method of assessing the scale of tourism-related production and its links across different sectors.

Tourism’s economic contribution to Zanzibar’s economy was measured by constructing 10 TSA tables. Overall, the derived accounts analysed all aspects of demand for goods and services associated with tourism within the economy, monitored the operational interface of the supply of such goods and services, and evaluated how supply interacts with other economic activities. This project’s main objective was establishing tourism’s direct financial contribution to Zanzibar’s economy.

The specific goals were to estimate tourism demand and supply, assess the value added by tourism activities in the economy, establish the level of employment generated by tourism activities, measure the gross fixed capital formation by the sector, and measure the collective consumption of tourism services by the Government.
