What makes a publication truly transformative?
As the year draws to an end, we take a moment to reflect on the key characteristics that might make policy documents, internal communications, and campaign materials truly transformative. Reviewing the publications we have worked on and the impact they have generated, there are defining qualities that highlight pioneering documents that are both compelling and thought-provoking. At the core of any publication lies the need for polished and professional execution. However, each client’s brief presents unique objectives and deliverables, whether it is crafting publications that effectively communicate complex ideas, adapting content for local audiences, or leveraging visually compelling designs to enhance engagement and drive meaningful impact.
One of the most important aspects of a transformative publication is its ability to present complex information in an accessible and engaging way. A great example of this was our collaboration with RES4Africa, where we provided a comprehensive graphic design solution for their report on gender disparity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and the role of women in the energy workforce. Through visually striking infographics, we worked to distil complex statistics into clear, digestible visuals that communicate the organisation’s findings and that would also resonate with their intended audience. The bold, clean designs were to help these stakeholders quickly grasp the importance of gender inclusion in the energy sector and spark meaningful discussions on advancing women’s participation in STEM.
Some of the most impactful publications have extended their reach beyond language barriers. This was the case while working with TechnoServe on educational materials supporting youth entrepreneurship in Kenya’s Blue Economy. This organisation works mainly with marginalised local communities in Kenya’s coastal region. To this end, there was a need for precise translation from English to Kiswahili to localise the business content. Beyond translation, we had the opportunity to redesign their Participants’ Workbook, part of their entrepreneurial education material for young people in Kenya’s coastal communities. This initiative not only aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) but also reinforced their commitment to fostering economic growth through knowledge-sharing.
Most effective publications have a strong visual storytelling component. For Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, this involved designing a series of engaging postcards to serve as conversation starters at a major conference in which they were participating. Each postcard had to be crafted with striking editorial visuals and concise messaging to communicate the organisation’s impact in all the African regions where they work with communities. This involved considering the cost-effectiveness and longevity of the communication materials. Therefore, a timeless postcard design ensures the materials can be used beyond the event, extending their value and reach.
Besides static images, video content also captures impactful moments, especially during events. Our work with UNECA during their consultative meeting for the IGAD Sustainable Tourism Master Plan 2024-2033 showcased this principle, which saw us combine well-designed visual materials and expertly produced media content to ensure that the event’s influence extended beyond the conference room. We were able to design and create professional event materials, including pull-up banners and backdrops that visually aligned with the master plan’s themes. Our media team also provided full video and photography coverage, producing a high-quality 17-minute video capturing key discussions and outcomes.
From policy reports to books and conference materials with each publication, we aim to produce polished, professional, and impactful publications. As we move into the next year, we remain committed to helping organisations create content that informs, inspires, and drives meaningful action.
