This report comprehensively analyses the untapped potential of inland waterways (IWT) in Eastern Africa for logistics and transportation. Despite their historical importance, inland waterways have been neglected in favour of road and rail networks, but this is now changing due to sustainability concerns. The report examines successful policies and programs from various countries, identifies critical success factors and best practices, and recommends 12 categories for enhancing the operational capabilities of IWT in Eastern Africa. It highlights the need for leadership, policy changes, and cooperation frameworks to achieve success. It also showcases the potential of IWT to support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
