World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually on April 26th to recognise the importance of intellectual property (IP) in driving innovation and creativity. The theme for 2023, “Accelerating Innovation and Creativity,” highlights intellectual property’s role in supporting the development and growth of new ideas, products, and services. As we celebrate this day, it is important to acknowledge the contributions of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs by addressing the challenges they face in accessing knowledge, skills, resources, and the support they require to thrive.

Women have made significant contributions to innovation and creativity throughout history. From Ada Lovelace, credited with writing the first computer program in the mid-1800s, to Stephanie Kwolek, who invented Kevlar, a strong synthetic fibre used in bulletproof vests, women have been at the forefront of groundbreaking inventions and discoveries. Today, women continue to make strides in various fields, including technology, medicine, and the arts.

However, despite these successes, women still face significant barriers when accessing the resources, they need to turn their ideas into reality. For example, studies have shown that women are less likely to receive funding for their startups than their male counterparts. Additionally, the underrepresentation of women in engineering and computer science fields limits their ability to innovate in these areas.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also disproportionately affected women, with many forced to leave the workforce to care for children and other family members. Underscores the need for policies and programs that support women in all aspects of their lives, including their professional and creative pursuits.

Despite these challenges, women have demonstrated a “can do” attitude and an unwavering commitment to pursuing their goals. Through their imagination, ingenuity, and hard work, women worldwide are shaping the future and driving innovation in a various field.

One way to support women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs is to increase access to the necessary resources they need to succeed. This support can include providing funding and mentorship opportunities, and ensuring that women have access to the education and training they need to excel in their chosen fields. Additionally, it is important to challenge gender stereotypes and biases that may limit women’s opportunities and discourage them from pursuing careers in certain fields.

At the same time, it’s important to celebrate the achievements of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs and to recognise the vital role they play in shaping our world. By fostering an environment that supports and encourages women’s creativity and innovation, we can accelerate progress towards a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
